Mold Damage in a Home, Basement or Crawl Space

Mold grows wherever there is moisture or humidity, including near plumbing leaks, in leaking roofs, in wet crawlspaces and basements, and in areas that have been affected by flooding.

If there is a water problem within your home, it's extremely important to fix the problem and dry the area within 48 hours to best prevent damage.

Mold growth is common on drywall, cardboard, photos, memorabilia, wood, furniture, leather, cloth, fiberglass resins, paper backings, and anything else organic in the space.

To annihilate mold, you will first need to extinguish the origin. Find how and where the moisture is seeping into your home and deal with it accordingly

                                      CAUTIONS TO MOLD

Exposure to mold may result in potential health effects and
symptoms such as allergic reactions, asthma, and other
                                            respiratory complaints.

There is no practical way to completely eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor air environment; the most effective way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.

Watch for condensation and wet spots. Fix source(s) of moisture problem(s) as soon as possible.

If mold is a problem in your home or office, call immediately to schedule an air sample and complementary consultation to find out what your options are to safely remove the mold and other contaminated materials
.

Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
Don’t wait! It’ll be too late!

Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-50% ) to decrease mold growth by: venting bathrooms, dryers, and other moisture-generating sources to the outside

;
using air conditioners and de-humidifiers; increasing ventilation; and using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing, and cleaning. Keep heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) drip pans clean, flowing properly, and unobstructed Vent moisture-generating appliances, such as dryers, to the outside when possible. Perform regular building/HVAC inspections and maintenance as scheduled.

Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 48 hours to prevent mold growth.

If your property has suffered a loss from water damage, give us a call immediately to insure that proper drying procedures and techniques have been implemented to thoroughly dry the materials (walls, framing, concrete, insulation, etc.).

Prevent condensation:

Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation
.

In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting

(by drinking fountains, sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation)
.

Molds can be found almost anywhere;

they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

Don't let foundations stay wet. Provide drainage and slope the ground away from the foundation

  WARNING!

Trying to clean and remove mold in a structure with
biocides is a temporary solution at best.

NEVER USE BLEACH

to try to
kill mold on porous surfaces, such as wood and drywall!
Bleach itself is
99% water, so you are essentially watering the roots of the mold. While
this will zchange the color of the mold, it will not kill off the mold and can
actually make the mold spread even more.
(Bleach is best used to sanitize
hard surfaces in the kitchen & bath.) Using other mold removal products
may remove mold in the short term, but this work can only be safely and
accurately done by a trained professional.
